Little Jackson Mountain (Franklin County)

The Rangeley High Peaks from Little Jackson Mountain.

Physical Description:Little Jackson Mountain, at 3,472 feet, is the shorter of the two Jackson Peaks. The mountain is flanked to the west by Tumbledown Mountain, and to the east by Jackson Mountain, the highest at 3,568. It is part of the Weld Area, which surround the village of Weld, on Webb Lake.
The peak is completely bare, covered in meadow and rock ledges. From the summit, a 360-degree view can be had, ranging from Saddleback Mountain to Mt.Washington. Tumbledown Pond, Webb Lake, Mt.Blue, the White Mountains, the Mahoosuc Range, Elephant Mountain, and the Rangeley High Peaks can all be seen. The summit area is a true gem when it comes to New England mountains.
Tumbledown Pond can be found just to the southwest of the peak, along with the trailless Jackson Pond to the northeast. An unclimbable fire tower can be found on Jackson Mountain, along with a short trail to it.

Trail Overview & Camping:Several trails ascend the mountain. Little Jackson Mountain Trail can be used to get to the summit. For the full trail map, click here. An unofficial herd path leads from Tumbledown Pond to the summit of Little Jackson Mountain, and this well defined path can be used to make a scenic loop that adds to around 10-miles. The trail difficulty is average.
No official camps can be found anywhere on the mountain, but a few unofficial tentsites can be found on Tumbledown Pond. Several campground sit in or around Weld, and on Webb Lake, which offers a good view of the mountain.

History & Lists:As mentioned before, Little Jackson Mountain is one of the Jackson Peaks. They are likely named after an early group of settlers, not the president. The mountain can not be found on any other list.

Interested in the true beauty of this mountain? Then I would recommend getting out there and climbing the mountain for it's fantastic views! Also, don't forget about nearby Tumbledown Mountain, as the two make for one of the best hikes in Maine.
