The List

The Views of Maine list is a continuously growing list of peaks in Maine under 4,000-feet with good views. All of these mountains differ in location, difficulty, and quality. The list was put together by Evan Markle, also known as EvanHikes. I run a blog, which can be found here. I'm 15 years old, and I've decided to create my own list to introduce new peaks to the people. Maine also seems to be lacking hiking lists, so here's one to rival 52 With A View of New Hampshire.

Peak of the Ridges, one of the mountains on the list.

For a mountain to be on the list, it must have a view, of course. All of the peaks must be between 2,500 and 4,000 feet. It should also have an official trail to the top. Logging roads and snowmobile trails don't qualify. Prominence does not matter either. You must also witness the view. If the views are past the summit, continue to the view. If it's a cloudy day, then go back and do it.

I'm not afraid of changing the list. As of now, there are 45 peaks on the list, but if there is any peak I overlooked that meets the qualifications above, please tell me, so it can be added to the official list. Be sure to check out all of the separate pages for each peak. The list goes as follows:

  1. Is Pleasant Mountain in Bridgton/Denmark too short? It’s a staple is Southern Maine and should be considered.

  2. Pleasant Mountain definitely belongs on a list like this, but it's too short in elevation. I may create a separate list of more peaks in Maine between the heights 2000-2500 with views, but I might just add these peaks to this list if people want me to.

  3. I would suggest:
-Little Jackson (in between Tumbledown and Blueberry Mountains)
    -Saddleback Wind Mountain in Carthage
-Old Blue Mountain (on the AT south of Bemis)
-Barker Mountain in Newry (home of Sunday River Ski Area)

All are over 2500 feet in elevation, and have exceptional views.

If this is to be a state-wide list, I would suggest lowering the minimum elevation requirement. That way, not everything will be lopsided in the western half of the state, and you can include amazing views in places like the Camden Hills, Acadia, the Black Woods (a cluster of peaks on the mainland northeast of Acadia) and Northern Maine.

    1. Thank you for the feedback. Peaks like Little Jackson, Saddleback Wind, and Old Blue are already on the list above. I know Barker Mountain does have good views, but no official hiking trail.

When it comes to the height, I may lower it to 2,000 feet. I feel as though if I lowered it more, there would be too many peaks on the list. There might be another list under 2,500 if people want to make one.
