The Owl (Piscataquis County)

The Owl and Baxter Peak from the west spur.

Physical Description:The Owl is an extremely steep knob that towers just to the west of Witherle Ravine, on Mt.Katahdin. The height is disputed, some say +3,700, but a more reasonable height is anywhere from 3,645 to 3,670-feet. The mountain is flanked to the west by Barren Mountain, and to the east by Witherle Ravine and Mt.Katahdin. Katahdin Falls, the highest in New England, can be found in the ravine.
The eastern side of the peak is covered in a massive, steep cliff-face. The summit area is made up of a west spur, and the true summit. The west spur is bald, and offers a view to the true summit and Witherle Ravine. The ridge connecting the two peaks is wooded, but the true summit offers an amazing view into the ravine. Be sure to watch your step!
Peaks that can be seen include Hamlin Peak, Northwest Plateau, The Brothers, Mt.Fort, Barren Mountain, The Spencers, Baker Mountain, and White Cap Mountain. The Gateway and the Hunt Trail are also visible.

Trail Overview & Camping:When it comes to ascending The Owl, there is only one official trail that ascends to the summit. The Owl Trail can be reached by following the Hunt Trail from Katahdin Stream Campground. The trail then climbs a distance to the side of the cliffs. The trail rides the very edge of the cliffs, so watch your step.
Katahdin Stream Campground can be found at the trailhead, and they also provide trail info.

History & Lists:The Owl gets it's name from it's resemblance to a great horned owl, when viewed from Katahdin Stream Campground. The mountain is on no other lists.
